How to use Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp for wall inspection
The use of Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp (also known as revealing light or painter’s inspection light) completely transforms the workflow. It is not just a final inspection tool, but a method of continuous surface control throughout all stages of painting work.
“Working with Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp” requires more time, but ultimately delivers a completely different level of surface smoothness and premium quality.
Surface preparation
The work begins in a standard way: first, the walls are primed with a deep-penetrating primer, and concrete elements are treated with a special concrete primer, such as бетонконтакт (betonokontakt).
Guide profiles, or beacons, are installed on the wall and aligned using a laser to achieve a perfectly straight surface. Beacons are installed up to 3 meters apart, preferably every 1 meter.
Plastering work is carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions, either mechanically or manually. After applying plaster, it is leveled between the beacons using a 3-meter rule.
After waiting a few minutes, the surface is leveled again with the rule to eliminate sagging plaster before it hardens.
After drying, at least 48 hours later, the first layer of filler (putty) is applied, for example gypsum-based filler. Its purpose is to correct major irregularities, waves, and level differences that could not be fixed with the rule.
After the layer fully dries, it is sanded using an electric sander (so-called “giraffe”). Dust is removed using a vacuum system attached to the sander, and this is where the main stage of using Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp begins.
The lamp is mounted on a tripod, telescopic pole, or held against the wall, and the entire surface is carefully inspected.
Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp immediately reveals all defects: grooves left by tools such as шпатель (putty knife), unsanded drips and runs, deep scratches, and other imperfections.
Such areas can be marked with a pencil for easy identification later.
It is important to remember that the base filler layer will not be perfectly smooth, but it must be as flat as possible relative to the overall plane. At this stage, achieving a “zero-level” surface is not necessary, as finishing materials are used for that.
Control of each filler layer
After inspecting the base layer, the second and final finishing filler layer is applied. At this stage, Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp is used continuously.
The light should be positioned so that its beam runs along the wall and slightly ahead of the working area.
The worker applies the filler and simultaneously, in real time, sees how evenly the material is distributed.
For finishing, it is recommended to use polymer-based filler, such as Knauf Rotband Paste or Xperio/Knauf Super Finish.
This polymer (vinyl-based) filler is significantly more expensive than gypsum filler, but its quality and durability are correspondingly higher.
The polymer filler should be applied with a roller over the entire surface and leveled with a long шпатель (putty knife) or rule.
Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp instantly shows:
• where the filler is applied too thick;
• where tool marks are left;
• where additional material is needed;
• where excess material must be removed.
After the finishing layer dries, the wall is sanded again with an electric sander using a very fine abrasive.
If 120-grit is used initially, the final stage may use 200-grit or even finer.
After that, a full inspection is performed again using Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp.
If minor scratches or open pores remain, they can be corrected with an additional ultra-thin layer of filler, known as skim coating.
This process continues until Losevi Light / Lossew Lamp reveals a completely uniform and perfectly smooth surface.
How to hold the lamp during inspection
The main rule is: the lamp must be as close as possible to the surface, just a few centimeters away.
The lamp body should fully touch the wall. The light must move not toward the wall, but along it, parallel to the surface, evenly grazing it.
Start inspection with slow vertical movement from bottom to top, then top to bottom, ensuring the entire wall is covered.
Then repeat the same horizontally, from left to right and back.
This is necessary to detect defects in different orientations. For example, vertical scratches are more visible under horizontal light, and vice versa.
Do not rush. There is a reason for the saying: haste makes waste. Carefully observe the illuminated strip.
Inspecting corners and difficult areas
Internal and external corners are the most difficult areas to inspect.
To inspect an internal corner, place the lamp against one wall and direct the light along the adjacent wall. This reveals how well the corner is formed and whether there are drips or depressions.
Then repeat the same process from the opposite side.
When inspecting external corners, window and door reveals, the light is first placed against the main wall to illuminate the slope (reveal), then reversed.
Pay special attention to:
• wall-to-ceiling junctions;
• areas around sockets and switches;
• all hard-to-reach sections.
Ceiling inspection is the most difficult, so it is recommended to mount the light on a telescopic pole or tripod to keep both hands free.
